Location: Tumbak Buyuh, Bali
Build area: 550m2
A sustainable family home with rice field and river views.
The home needed to have space for two adults and two young kids, but we designed it so there was still a relatively low building footprint. We used all local materials – reclaimed teakwood cladding and Bali riverstone.
With kids running around the house, preventing over-heating was important. So we designed the house with a ventilation stack, giving passive ventilation throughout the home all day and massively reducing the need for air conditioning. We also made sure the house had big roof overhangs on both floors, to protect the inside spaces from being blasted by the sun and tropical rains.
We wanted to make this home a fun and interactive space for the parents and kids. There are trees and lots of planting in the house, to help bring the outside indoors. The living, kitchen and terrace areas are all open plan and look out on to a 12 metre lap pool with a Mediterranean inspired courtyard.
