Mulai villas are set in a rural, rugged landscape, a short walk from the pristine white sands of Serangan Beach. The owners of this project, an Australian family along with their relatives, wanted to invest in this part of Lombok, as well as have a place to stay during their frequent visits to the island. 

Taking the roof forms in the nearby and well-known Sade village, with their steep slope pitch, we adapted and interpreted these for one 4-bed and one 2-bed family villa. We used materials based on what we could see being used in the village – dry grass roofs, clay and mud on the facade walls, grey local stone in the floors. These natural, cooling and breathable materials are ideal for the humidity and heat of Lombok. 

The shape of the steep slope roof follows inside of the property, allowing hot air to rise, aiding passive cooling in the tropical climate. The high pitch also very efficiently supports water drainage during the heavy rain season, reducing the risk for any water damage.
