A beach club concept interpreting the architectural language and cultural traditions of Flores.
Ikan Boogie is a beach club concept proposed for a hillside site overlooking the coastline of Flores.
The design was developed in response to the cultural landscape of the island, where traditional villages, clan identities and ceremonial traditions remain an active part of everyday life. The concept explores how these influences could be interpreted within a contemporary hospitality setting while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
The architectural form draws inspiration from the layered grass-roof structures commonly found in village settlements across Flores. These buildings often sit at varying levels across steep terrain, creating a sequence of staggered rooflines across the hillside.
This idea was reinterpreted through a single continuous roof structure that rises and falls to echo the surrounding hills. The structural framework beneath was kept intentionally minimal in order to frame views towards the landscape and ocean beyond.
Material selections prioritise those traditionally used within the region, including bamboo, rattan, lontar palm roofing and clay-based wall finishes. Carved timber panels and woven ikat textiles referencing the patterns and symbols of local villages were proposed as key interior elements.
The concept explores how a contemporary beach club experience could emerge from the architectural language, materials and cultural traditions of Flores.
