A small collection of villas shaped by the roof forms and material traditions of Sasak village architecture.

Mulai Villas are located within a rugged coastal landscape a short walk from the white sands of Serangan Beach in Lombok.

The project comprises two family villas — one four-bedroom and one two-bedroom — designed as both private residences and holiday accommodation.

The architecture draws inspiration from the steeply pitched roof forms of the nearby and well-known Sade village. These traditional forms were carefully reinterpreted to suit contemporary living while maintaining a strong connection to the local architectural language of Lombok.

Material choices were also informed by the surrounding vernacular. Grass roofs, clay and earthen wall finishes and locally sourced stone flooring create a palette of natural, breathable materials well suited to the island’s humid tropical climate.

The steep roof form continues internally, creating generous volumes that allow hot air to rise and support passive cooling. The high pitch also facilitates efficient water drainage during the heavy tropical rains, helping protect the building fabric over time.
