A hospitality renovation translating traditional Indonesian textile culture into a contemporary interior language.

Lumi Beach Club forms the first phase of a wider renovation and interior remodelling project for the Lumi Hotel on Gili Trawangan.

The original architecture was designed by Indonesian architect Andra Matin in 2019. Our brief was to redesign and upgrade the interior spaces while remaining aligned with the spirit of Matin’s original concept — a contemporary interpretation of traditional Indonesian values.

Taking this idea as a starting point, our design approach centred around one of Indonesia’s most enduring cultural traditions: textiles.

Research into traditional batik and ikat patterns from across the Indonesian archipelago informed the development of a series of contemporary motifs. These were reinterpreted and translated into a collection of custom-made fabrics, rugs, ceramics and tiles produced in collaboration with local craftspeople.

Within this first phase of work, we designed and oversaw the production of the beach club’s interior spaces, including the beach and bar areas, retail space and restrooms. All furniture, fittings, lighting and bespoke fabrics were designed specifically for the project.

Further phases of renovation for the Lumi Hotel are currently in development.
