Ulu Cliffhouse

Ulu Cliffhouse

About

Type:  Beach Club

Location:  Uluwatu, Bali

Status: Hospitality

Build area: 5,000m²

A cliff-edge beach club adapted from an unfinished structure overlooking Uluwatu’s surf break.

Ulu Cliffhouse is located on the cliffs above Uluwatu beach, positioned approximately 30 metres above the ocean along Bali’s Bukit Peninsula.

The original concept for the project was developed by London-based interior design studio Shed. Our role was to adapt and refine the design to suit the local climate, site conditions and construction context, while remaining closely aligned with the original vision.

The project began with an unfinished villa structure centred around an existing 25-metre pool. The original buildings were repurposed to form the arrival sequence and retail spaces, while new open-air timber structures were introduced on either side of the site to house the restaurant and bars.

Two additional terraces were constructed at the front of the site, extending towards the cliff edge and creating areas for daybeds and banquette seating overlooking the ocean.

At the base of the cliff, a smaller space known as the “Bar on the Rocks” was developed among the natural boulders below the main venue. Built on reclaimed timber platforms and shaded by climbing plants and Ketapang trees, the bar creates a more intimate setting directly connected to the landscape and surf break below.

Furniture, fittings and fabrics for the venue were sourced locally and produced in collaboration with craftspeople in Bali.
