Suku Houses

Type:  Private residential

Location:  Berawa, Canggu

Status: Residential

Build area: 200m2 per plot

A small residential development exploring crafted interiors and tropical living in the evolving, coastal neighbourhood of Berawa.

Suku Houses was our first in-house residential development, located in the heart of Berawa, Canggu.

Designed and developed by our studio, the project was crafted from the ground up — from architecture that responds to the surrounding neighbourhood, to interiors designed and produced in close collaboration with craftspeople across Indonesia.

The homes were designed to balance openness and privacy throughout the day. Living spaces remain light and naturally cooled in the tropical heat, while layered materials and warm lighting create a more intimate atmosphere in the evenings. Generous areas for hosting and gathering sit alongside quieter spaces for retreat.

The exterior architecture is calm and contemporary, softened by tropical planting and a façade of creamy natural brickwork. The hand-cut brick tiles are produced from local limestone and paired with recycled timber screens that can fully open to the gardens or close for privacy and shade.

Natural materials and sustainable construction methods were prioritised throughout the project. Recycled and responsibly sourced timbers were used alongside handcrafted finishes and Greensense concrete.

Large sliding doors, windows and a central louvered skylight allow daylight and cross-ventilation to move through the house, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling and artificial lighting during the day.

Nearly all interior elements were produced specifically for Suku Houses by craftspeople across Bali and Java. Recycled teak furniture, locally produced tiles and natural stone finishes sit alongside lantern lighting made from banana-fibre paper in Ubud, hand-dyed rugs and fabrics from Yogyakarta and Bali, and handwoven ikat textiles sourced directly from makers in Sumba.
