A collection of surf villas shaped by the quiet rhythm of Areguling’s coastline.
Drawing from mid-century beach architecture and local materials, the design creates a refined, low-lying retreat connected to landscape and surf culture.
Set within one of Lombok’s most untouched coastal landscapes, Mimpi Areguling is a small collection of villas designed to reflect the quiet rhythm of its surroundings. Positioned between rolling hills and a curved sandy bay, the project draws from the site’s natural calm, its surf culture, and its sense of gentle isolation.
The development comprises a larger shared surf villa and three smaller, more private surf cabins — creating a balance between communal living and individual retreat. Together, they form a low-lying architectural composition that sits softly within the landscape, prioritising openness, privacy and connection to nature.
The concept is rooted in surf culture — not through cliché, but through a more considered translation of its origins and evolution. Influences range from Polynesian surf heritage to the refined, mid-century beach homes of California. These references are reinterpreted through a Lombok lens, using local materials, craft and spatial sensibilities to create something that feels both grounded and contemporary.
Architecture is intentionally simple and restrained. Clean horizontal lines, deep overhangs and open-plan living spaces create a calm and unfussy language. Large openings frame views out to the landscape, while inward-facing moments — courtyards, terraces and shaded outdoor rooms — offer privacy and protection from the elements.
Materiality plays a central role in shaping the experience. A palette of local timber, stone, lime finishes and woven natural materials creates warmth and texture throughout. Traditional elements such as rattan, pandan and hand-crafted timber details are layered with more refined finishes, striking a balance between rawness and comfort.
Passive design strategies are embedded throughout. Deep roof overhangs, cross ventilation and shaded outdoor spaces reduce reliance on mechanical cooling, ensuring the architecture responds naturally to the tropical climate.
Mimpi Areguling is designed as a place to slow down — where architecture, landscape and lifestyle come together to create a refined but relaxed coastal experience. The project is currently in its final costing stage and is scheduled to move to tender shortly, with construction anticipated to begin in 2026.
