Set on a long, narrow riverside site in Pererenan, Bali, we designed a collection of six villas encompassing both architecture and interiors.

The brief called for a mix of one, three and five-bedroom villas for short and long-term stays, with a Mediterranean influence reflecting the clients’ Spanish background. Our approach was to bring this influence together with the materials, craft and tropical setting of Bali, creating a collection of homes that shared an overall character while retaining their own individuality.

Rather than repeating a single villa layout across the development, each home was considered in relation to its position on the site, its neighbouring buildings and the surrounding landscape. The villas step down the sloping land towards the river, with variations in orientation, gardens, pools and living spaces helping to create privacy and a different experience within each home. The largest villa sits at the lowest point of the site, opening towards the mature landscape along the riverbank.

The interiors bring together Mediterranean references with materials and craftsmanship from Bali and across Indonesia. Terracotta floors, handmade and hand-painted tiles, warm timber and ceramics sit alongside tropical planting and a palette of natural tones, deep greens and warmer earthy colours. Arched openings frame views into planted courtyards and connect the living spaces with the gardens and pools beyond.

Furniture was designed specifically for the project and made by craftspeople in Bali and Indonesia, allowing individual pieces to be developed for the different spaces. From the timber lounge chairs and curved sofas to the dining furniture and outdoor loungers, the interiors were considered as part of the overall design rather than furnished with a standard collection of pieces.

Across the development, the intention was to create a collection of homes that felt connected but not identical, with individuality developed through their relationship to the site, their layouts and the details of their interiors.
