This small 2-bedroom Macdonald Villa project was designed for an Irish client who wanted to build a rental property in Bali. The site is located close to Echo beach in Bali and so the design needed to reflect its coastal location.

In order to design an efficient space on a very small site, we were inspired by simple mid-century forms that feature large, pitched roof angles. Such forms let in lots of natural light, provide double-height spaces, and help to protect the building from the harsh tropical climate.

The lower floor of Macdonald Villa features a sunken lounge, open kitchen, and dining area along with a swim-up pool bar that connects the pool with the internal spaces. Large operable glazing wraps around this lower floor which helps keep the spaces feeling light and airy. The upper level sees two mirrored ensuite bedrooms with connecting balconies. 

To keep things feeling laid back and beachy Design Assembly have proposed the use of recycled teakwood panelling, natural stones, textured walls, and washed-out colours for the interior. Construction is now in full flow with completion expected Q1 2024.
