Our first in-house residential development in the heart of Berawa, Canggu. Suku Houses were crafted from the ground up. From architecture that responds to the site and Berawa as a neighbourhood, to handmade interiors that look and feel good to be around.

We knew the spaces had to be right for different situations. Light and cool in the heat of the day and a cosy haven at night. Ample space for staying guests and good areas for entertaining, as well as places for privacy when it’s needed. We imagined every corner of every room, down to the last detail.

From the outside, the architecture is contemporary and calming, softened up with tropical greenery and the creamy natural brickwork of the façade. These handcut brick tiles are made from local limestone. They sit alongside recycled timber screens, which open up fully to views of the garden, or close completely for privacy and shading.

As with all our projects, it was important for us to showcase local craftsmanship and use sustainable materials and building techniques wherever possible. As well as recycled and sustainable timbers and natural, handcrafted finishes, we also used Greensense concrete wherever possible.

Inside, open spaces with floor to ceiling sliding doors and windows, along with a central louvered skylight, all let the outside in. They also flood the house with natural light and cross-ventilation, helping to keep the building cool and reducing the need for air conditioning and lights on during the day.

Nearly all of the interiors were handmade specifically for Suku Houses by local craftspeople in Bali and Java. We used recycled teakwood for most of the furniture. Locally made tiles and natural stone finishings for walls and countertops. The lantern lighting was made with banana fiber paper by makers in Ubud. Natural, hand-dyed rugs and fabrics were made in Jogja and Bali. And the handwoven ikat fabrics were sourced directly from makers in Sumba.
